Jesus, We Look to Thee

By Charles Wesley

Lyrics

1. Jesus, we look to Thee,
Thy promised presence claim.
Thou in the midst of us shall be,
assembled in Thy name.
Thy name salvation is,
which we here come to prove;
Thy name is life and health and peace,
and everlasting love.
2. Not in the name of pride
or selfishness we meet.
From nature's paths we turn aside
and worldly thoughts forget.
We meet the grace to take
Which Thou hast freely giv'n;
we meet on earth for Thy dear sake,
that we may meet in heav'n.
3. Present we know Thou art,
but, O, Thyself reveal.
Now, Lord, let ev'ry waiting heart
Thy mighty comfort feel.
O may Thy quickening voice
the death of sin remove,
and bid our inmost souls rejoice
in hope of perfect love.

About This Hymn

“Jesus, We Look to Thee” is a hymn by Charles Wesley that expresses a heartfelt plea for unity, love, and peace within the body of Christ. Written during the early years of the Methodist movement, the hymn reflects Wesley’s deep concern for Christian fellowship grounded in shared devotion to the Savior. Its tone is prayerful, addressing Christ directly as the source of harmony among believers.

The central theme of the hymn is spiritual unity that flows from looking to Jesus. Drawing from Hebrews 12:2, believers are urged to fix their eyes upon Christ as the author and finisher of faith. The hymn teaches that true unity is not achieved through human effort alone, but through a common focus on the Lord. When hearts are centered on Him, divisions diminish and love increases.

Another key emphasis is brotherly love. Echoing Psalm 133 and the teachings of Christ in John 17, the hymn prays that believers would dwell together in peace and reflect the unity that exists between the Father and the Son. Wesley understood that the credibility of Christian witness is closely tied to visible love among believers. Therefore, the hymn functions both as worship and as exhortation.

Theologically, the hymn affirms Christ’s present role as Shepherd and Head of the church. He is not distant, but actively guiding and sustaining His people. The prayer for unity is rooted in confidence that Christ hears and answers the petitions of His church.

“Jesus, We Look to Thee” remains suitable for congregational worship, especially in services focused on church fellowship, reconciliation, or communion. Its enduring message reminds believers that peace and love within the church are not optional virtues, but gracious gifts that flow from steadfastly fixing our gaze upon Christ.
