There's A Garden Where Jesus Is Waiting
By Eleanor Allen Schroll
Lyrics
There’s a place that is wondrously fair,
For it glows with the light of His presence
’Tis that beautiful garden of prayer.
O the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer,
O the beautiful garden of prayer!
There my Savior awaits, and He opens the gates
To the beautiful garden of prayer.
And I go, with my burden and care,
Just to learn from His lips words of comfort
In the beautiful garden of prayer.
And He bids you to come meet Him there,
Just to bow and receive a new blessing
In the beautiful garden of prayer.

About This Hymn
“There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting, there’s a place that is wondrously fair,” is the inviting first line of this tender hymn written by Eleanor Allen Schroll in 1920. The hymn paints a serene picture of a sacred space“that beautiful garden of prayer” where Christ waits to welcome all who come burdened and seeking comfort. Each verse invites the worshiper to enter that hidden place, to lay down cares, and to draw near to the Savior whose presence glows in that quiet place.
The refrain repeats the image of the beautiful garden, singing of how “my Savior awaits, and He opens the gates to the beautiful garden of prayer.” The gentle, rhythmic meter of 10.9.10.9 with refrain gives the hymn a lyrical quality that is easy to remember and sing. The hymn has found a warm place in hymnals and worship services focused on invitation, comfort, devotion, and personal communion with the Lord. Its imagery comforts the soul with the assurance that Christ is waiting and ready to open the gates into His presence for every weary believer.
